The Positives – “Curtains” Official Music Video

Artist city, country: Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Artist Biography: Young, fresh and brash. After playing in a few bands the boys decided to form The Positives. After their formation early 2017, The Positives have recorded their first EP ‘Battleships’ which was released on the 1st of March 2018. Their sound can be described as a combination of pop punk, indie and alternative rock. The songs are made of a good mixture of sing-a-long, catchy hooks and heartfelt lyrics. Since the beginning of 2018 they’ve been playing shows which went alongside the release of their first singles (‘Alright’ & ‘Please’) and their EP ‘Battleships’. After the release of their EP they released an acoustic version of their song ‘Alright’ which is called ‘Will B. Alrite’ in honour of the passing of Chuck Berry. The trio have played numerous of shows since with names such as Trash Boat, Knuckle Puck, Broadside and State Champs. The Positives are a young set of lads which make sure there’s no way around them after you’ve seen them.

Director Name: Gijs ‘Goose’ de Roij
Producer Name: Tim Kauffman

About the Video: ‘Curtains’ will mark the next chapter of our story as The Positives ending the cycle of our debut EP. The single is accompanied by a music video which represents our struggle with depression and mental health issues. Our goal is to bring out the positive in the negative. The idea behind the song is a bit complicated. It was written as an acoustic song that was meant to have a storytelling aspect to it. Hence, the lyrics in the verses portray certain settings. The underlying function of those parts is translating the mood. It isn’t specific about the emotions one feels at those times, but the setting suggests the emotions that are present in said moments. The chorus is a little more direct. It is in one sense about insomnia, not being able to sleep and losing your mind because of it. The other side of those lyrics is the desperation, depression and the emotions you feel when you’re trying your best, but you’re still not achieving. The consolidation is found in the bridge. It shows both the bad and good things, bringing out the positive things in the negative (‘one side gold and the other grey’ ). The synthesis of those thing steps into the light in the last line of the bridge (‘I was wide awake and dreaming’ ). This is a reoccurring theme in our songs. There are always bad things happening, but it always gets better. This negativity paired with the positive twist is the message we want to get across. Depression is nothing new for us, but letting people know that they are able to change it, find hope and learn to cope with it is something very important to us.

Song Lyrics: “Curtains”

I woke up and felt the breeze from the window slowly catching up with my nerves.
As the sun came up the curtains were lit like fireworks.
That’s when I closed my eyes and fell asleep.

The nights are much harder to get through.
I am wide awake.
Wide awake.
The mornings always bring the brightest blue.
I’m wide awake.

I stood still and asked the sun unanswered questions.
He just gazed at me and I ran in all directions.
I came out at sea where the waves were much taller than what I could be.
I was feeling smaller.
The nights are much harder to get through.
I am wide awake.
Wide awake.
The mornings always bring the brightest blue.
I’m wide awake.
Time stood still in between night and day.
One side gold and the other grey.
I was wide awake and dreaming.
Wide awake and dreaming.

The nights are much harder to get through.
I am wide awake.
Wide awake.
The mornings always bring the brightest blue.
I’m wide awake.
