Shatner have a solid reputation for ambitious multilayered guitar pop, often with a sci-fi twist.
They first emerged in the West Yorkshire area (probably out of some kind of swirly vortex thing) in the early noughties, and made two albums, “ENERGISE” and “THIRTEEN O’CLOCK” – both were voted into the ‘top 100 local albums of the decade’ list put together by Leeds music mag “Vibrations” ahead of many better-known artists.
They returned in 2014 with a third critically acclaimed album entitled WOW SIGNALS, featured on the BBC Introducing shows across the North. Following a successful pledge campaign, Shatner have now produced a fourth album – ENLIGHTENMENTAL – with a more muscular rock sound, full of warp drive pop guitars, four part harmonies and photon torpedo beats. It’s pop Jim, but not as you know it!
The band is centered around the infectious and often darkly humorous songs of frontman/guitarist Jim Bower, whose brother Rick plays bass. Sarah Niven adds harmonies and percussion. The latest Shatner line-up features lead guitarist Paul Morricone and drummer Anthony Sargeant, known for their work with Huddersfield ‘evil pop’ band The Scaramanga Six. The album is produced by James Kenosha, whose credits include Pulled Apart By Horses, Dinosaur Pile Up, Marmozets and many more.
Hard to pin down to a genre, Shatner have been recently described as “somewhere between The Clash and The B52s.” It’s pop, Jim, but not as you know it.
