Hex – “Billboard” Sloth Records – Official Music Video
Artist city, country: Wellington, New Zealand
Artist Biography: New Zealand-based rock duo HEX are Kiki Van Newtown and Jason Erskine. Brimming with frustration, imagery, and verve, their music deals in subversion: a discordant, electric experience under the umbrella of sonic twilight.
Since 2015 HEX have toured throughout New Zealand, Australia, and the USA, opening for major acts including Dinosaur Jr and The Kills. Their EP ‘Calling to the Universe’ and recent album ‘The Hill Temple’ (February 2018) were both critically well received, garnering extensive support from College Radio across Australasia and the U.S. HEX spent March 2018 touring the U.S including six official showcases at SXSW. ‘The Hill Temple’ spent 8 weeks in the NACC charts peaking at no. 88, and the band was covered by music media including NPR, Bitch Media, The Chicago Tribune, and Noisey. The final single and video from ‘The Hill Temple’ is due to be released in September 2018. “Billboard” is at times dark and at times animated, proffering an elusive celebration of dissent; a pro-choice rock anthem that directs its anger toward the contemporary zeitgeist that restricts women’s freedoms. “HEX calls its sound “witch-rock,” and damned if it doesn’t sound like, well, witch-rock: dark and sinister, gritty and ethereal, muscular and feminine. The portentous epic “Sight Beyond the Line” storms and billows with ominous intensity, driven in part by the commanding presence of singer Kiki Van Newtown.” NPR SXSW 2018 Hottest 100

About the Video: New single “Billboard” from New Zealand-based rock duo HEX is at times dark and at times animated, profferring an elusive celebration of dissent underlaid by threading vocals, pulsating drums, and barely-contained rage; a pro-choice rock anthem that directs its anger toward New Zealand male politicians and the contemporary zeitgeist that restricts women’s freedoms.
“With our crowbars we insist that free choice rules the womb,” sings Kiki Van Newtown, ending the song. It’s a reference to something that actually happened; Van Newtown once pulled over in her car, got a crowbar from the trunk, and violently dismantled a billboard alongside a highway that featured anti-choice images of a fetus. Now, HEX has translated that experience into a new music video, featuring the three ghostly characters arming themselves with crowbars and wrecking similar billboards.
Having recently undergone some personnel changes, HEX is quickly becoming a new band. Brimming with frustration, imagery, and verve, their music deals in subversion: a discordant, electric experience under the umbrella of sonic twilight.

Song Lyrics: “Billboard”
Riding in the backseat, it doesn’t feel like a holiday
Does making life make life or does it take it away?
And we laugh as we explain how deep this runs
That we are dead on our feet, but when will it look light again
Out in front
Light above and loam below, the mountain bellows silver snow
It lies like ash, a silver sash, we lay the son into the hole
Snowflakes overflow the mountain in the desert
We a dig a hole and with six hands place the sun in it
We pull into the gravel and we open up our doors to see
A holy sign set in a meadow
We leap the fence faithfully
And with our crowbars we destroy the billboard
You say he’s sacred but god is dead and we pray to the goddess
Light above and loam below, the mountain bellows silver snow
It lies like ash, a silver sash, we lay the son into the hole
Snowflakes overflow the mountain in the desert
We a dig a hole and with six hands place the sun in it
And we are some mothers’ girls
We were named beneath the moon
With our crowbars we insist
That free choice rules the womb
