-Topic – “How’s the Kid?” Official Teaser Video

Artist city, country: Dallas, Texas, U.S.A.

Artist Biography: “I earned a $10,000 grant from my city, just for doing the artsy fartsy stuff I would’ve done regardless.”

So-So Topic, or “-topic”, for short, is a hip-hop artist/self-taught producer out of Dallas, TX, by way of Alberta, Canada. As the leading man of a small collective entitled TeamFromNowhere (a team of creatives ranging from singers & poets to multimedia content creators), -topic has shared his story in multiple academic settings including TEDx, the Dallas Museum of Art, and presented performances alongside today’s innovators of creative culture, such as Kendrick Lamar, Erykah Badu, and Thundercat (in collaboration with Red Bull Sound Select).

On top of that, he’s the first artist in the city to receive a grant for facilitating his own shows and events, featuring local headliners with all original music.
With the most recent release of his feel-good freebie ‘tape of the year, “My Favorite Sweaters”, the talented up-and-comer continues the effort to carve a dynamic lane for himself on the path towards meriting his own unique audience. In 2011, he released his first self-produced album, “Finally Confident”, independently. The following year, -topic released his “Songs About P___y (S.A.P)” EP, which featured the TeamFromNowhere collective aiding in what music appreciators nationwide consider to be the “Perfect Valentines’ Day Soundtrack, whether single, paired, or in an ‘It’s complicated’, whatever that means.” With the 2013 release of the 5-song “Time to Feed the Birds: Stories of Dead Kings” EP, -topic gained the ears of both Erykah Badu and Lupe Fiasco, with Erykah Badu paying $100 for the $5 EP.

-topic’s latest self-produced album “Be Good & Do Well”, was co-signed by rap icons Yassin Bey (Mos Def) and GZA of Wu-Tang Clan: “My heroes were all starting to listen. The people I looked up to began to see that I really had something to say.”
Fast forward to the present day, -topic is a nationally recognized Red Bull Sound Select artist, and has begun work on his third studio album, aptly titled “These Things Will Happen”. Now partnering citywide with Dallas’ premiere instrumentalists and vocal performers alike, -topic finds his unconventional yet familiar sound ranked among critically acclaimed artists such as Leon Bridges, Polyphonic Spree, T.D.E., Big K.R.I.T., and Hiatus Kaiyote.

About The Video: It all started when I contacted him about doing a music video and he said that he was looking to promote his Favorite Sweaters album. During the initial pitch, I asked him – “Ok, I have two music video concepts that I think we could work with. One is a really sleek modern and stylized concept, and the other is a weird abstract that is a bit goofy.” Topic then proceeded to tell me how he likes weird ideas and encouraged the creativity to do something unique. Over the course of a week I worked on the treatment, outline, and script. During that time I secured locations to shoot at Kholes, Shenanigans, and Lindsey Park. After that, we wrapped at the Adam Hats lofts where we all climbed the water tower to talk about what it means to be an artist in Dallas and why it is important to be interesting.

He we are today with the end result of weeks of preparation, a day of shooting, and a week of editing.
