Husbandry – “Elder Spencer Deery” Aqualamb Records – Official Music Video

Artist city, country: Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.

Artist Biography: As buzz continues to build around the heavy-music underground, something seems to have gone missing: the soul, and more importantly the songs. In the current climate, New York’s Husbandry are a genuine oddity. They’re a heavy, progressive-without-being-prog rock band with a real-deal singer, who aren’t afraid to write actual songs and play them with unabashed flair and enthusiasm. In other words, they evoke that magical early-to-mid-’90s moment when great, unclassifiable bands like Quicksand, Jawbox and Shudder to Think flourished, while avoiding tired retro tendencies. Unlike so many heavy bands these days, they truly seem to want you to listen and remember what you hear.

HUSBANDRY:
Carina Zachary – Vocals
Jordan Usatch – Guitars, bass
Arnau Bosc – Bass, vocals, bass, percussion
Andrew Gottlieb – Drums

Director Name: Eric Palmerlee & Johnathan Swafford
Producer Name: Aqualamb

About the Video: “Lyrically, this song is coming from an observational standpoint. I was exposed to different religions throughout my childhood, by way of my family’s interests and my own existentialism. It’s always fascinated me how faith and religious beliefs can be such a powerful force in people’s lives. One of my last experiences involved the Mormon church, when I was in my teens.
Almost every line in this song pertains to things I directly observed or experienced. For example, the first line “Come ‘fore the great sun (son) rises…” connects to the youth of the church (myself included), having to get up early (before the sun even rose) to attend religious morning classes daily, before heading to actual school.
Personally, I found the religion full of plot holes and focused on self restraint, though many twisted things were happening amongst the people of the community itself. It’s a song about delusion and the hypocrisy of religion. It wasn’t a sustainable way of life for me. But I don’t look back on that time with resentment or knock anyone who finds comfort in its teachings.”

Song Lyrics: “Elder Spencer Deery”

Come ‘fore the great sun rises.
Guide me, through and through.
Dressed in holy undergarments.
Watchful eyes, they say:
“Let the word remake you”
“Bow before those sent”
Young missionaries, eyes half-closed, twist fable into proof.
Incendiary lust for what will lead to certain doom.
Call out, call out, to make us… To make us…
Constricted, sinless, vacant.
I will not cave in.
The lines between have been read.
Ripped off the verses from my skin.
Prophetic gift, sever the limb.
Young missionaries, eyes half-closed, twist fable into proof.
Incendiary lust for what will lead to certain doom.
Call out, call out, to make us… To make us…
Constricted, soulless, vacant.
Wipe desire out. Christ across your mouth.
Watchful eyes, they say:
“Let the word remake you”
We were one, built to break down.
To fall apart.
Didn’t know learning to doubt would be the start… Be the start.
Your lies are vast and plenty. We won’t buy into anymore.
We were one, built to break down. To fall apart.
Your lies are vast and plenty. We wont buy into anymore.
Your lies.
