Ayo River – “Mercedes” Official Music Video

Artist city, country: Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.

Artist Biography: Ayo River, the moniker used by songwriter Weston Taylor, is a project that intersects deeply personal lyrics with the inescapable connectedness of the modern world. In 2014, Weston started recording his songs with Athens, Georgia, producer Matt Martin. The songs they assembled over the next two years comprise ayo river’s debut LP Failed State. These songs are Weston’s internal tales of loss and miscommunication in the wildly connected age of the internet, brought to life with sweeping indie-pop influenced writing and production.

Director Name: Chad Tennies
Producer Name: Resolve Media Group
About The Video: This is a song about the way people come in and out of your life with no warning, and the effects their sudden arrivals and departures can have on you. I was in a car crash last year that woke me up out an existential coma, reminded me how fragile life is and how quickly it can be taken away from you. I had been feeling really down about where I was at. I’d finished school in the same city I’d grown up in, seen so many friends start new lives with successful jobs in other places while I was still mowing over the same ground, not doing much. The crash snapped me out of that self pity kind of feeling, made me less concerned with comparing my life to the lives of others and more involved with taking advantage of everything in front of me. It took something out of the blue and life threatening like that to wake me up.

With the video, we wanted to convey that sense of lives intersecting, for better or for worse. All the paths cross in a seemingly random way, but a connection emerges out of them, and change ensues. It’s a play around the line “People come, people go, no one really knows”, which is the core of the song to me.

Song Lyrics:
So I guess that we’re not invited
To the party out on the westside
Me and all of my friends decided
We’d be better off as strangers
After Megan moved out to Denver
I came home to ashes and embers
Started swiping left on Tinder
And fantasized about my funeral

I was introduced to a lady
When she crashed her brand new Mercedes
Through a red light, straight into me
She screamed and asked “are you alright?”
So I said, well, thanks for asking
At this point I don’t care what happens
We stood there causing the traffic
And laughed and had ourselves and awkward hug

Who says you can’t go home again
It’s all just something someone said
My eyes can only document
So much before they close again

People come people go
No one really knows
Going out on the town
Till we drown our woes

Who says you can’t go home again
It’s all just something someone said
My eyes can only document
So much before they close again
